Heed youth's good advice

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: City must ban outdoor balloons, May 1.

I applaud 15-year-old Lou-Ann Lee for writing her letter urging the City of Ottawa to stop the practice of releasing balloons into the air. The letter was a refreshing reinforcement of my faith in today's youth and their commitment, concern and respect for the world around them. I hope the city heeds her advice.

This year, the city erected 15 new "Do Not Feed The Wildlife" signs at Andrew Haydon Park. Obviously the city's priorities are out of line with progressive public opinion when it comes to regulations that restrict dangerous activities. Instead of banning the feeding of chipmunks and chickadees in parks, city officials should focus on implementing long-overdue bans on the use of pesticides for landscaping and the releasing of balloons into the environment. These are activities whose serious long-term harmful effects have been well-documented.
