Students need phys-ed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a high-school student, I feel the school board is discouraging me from pursuing physical activity within my school. Two years ago, it became compulsory to get only one high-school gym credit from Grade 9 to graduation. The media, on the other hand, continually say that obesity and unhealthy lifestyles are a growing problem.

Not only has the board reduced the requirements for gym credits, it has also eliminated other opportunities. Outdoor Education, an extracurricular school program, can only be taken by students not taking a gym course in the same year. Youths are constantly told to be more physically active, so why does their learning environment make it even more challenging to participate in these healthy activities?

More attention needs to be paid to improving physical activity where all children learn to develop healthy lifestyles: at school.
