Algonquin College's student newspaper, The Algonquin Times, took first place overall last weekend in the college/university general excellence class at the Ontario Community Newspaper Association newspaper competitions.

Algonquin beat out several other competitors to capture first place, including Ryerson University and University of Waterloo, according to a statement issued by the co-ordinator of Algonquin's Journalism -Print Program, Joe Banks.

"The Times is professional enough to appeal to a student audience, as well as faculty and staff. Strong, diverse coverage includes events and issues, along with excellent photography," judge Lois Tuffin was quoted as saying.

Algonquin also took top honours in two other categories: journalism-print student, Lindsay Valente, was first among 13 entries for Best Student Writing; and the paper's online edition won in the University/College online edition award category.
